On January 9th, 2015, the Tomah Police Department is partnering with organizations in support of police officers across the country by supporting National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day (L.E.A.D.). In light of recent negativity directed toward law enforcement nationally there is a need to show law enforcement officers that our citizens recognize and support the difficult and sometimes impossible career they have chosen. Can you imagine going to work each day and wondering if youll survive your shift and see your family that night? Most people cant. But in law enforcement, this is a fact of life. Each day 780,000 police officers across our country put a badge on and go to work knowing they may face extremely dangerous situations. Yet, they go to work anyway. What the public doesnt see is the toll officers endure to keep our communities safe. On average, approximately 155 officers die in the line of duty each year, 50,000 officers are assaulted each year, 14,000 officers are injured each year, and over 300 officers commit suicide each year. There are very few professions in the world where you will find these kinds of statistics. Those who appreciate law enforcement and are discouraged about the negative attention being given to law enforcement are encouraged to take time on Friday, January 9th to show their support. How you say? - Change your profile picture on social media to an image portraying law enforcement in a positive light. - See a police officer, thank a police officer. A few words of encouragement and support goes a long ways. - Wear blue clothing in support of law enforcement. - Send a card of support to your local police department. - Share a story about a positive experience with law enforcement on your social media page. - Ask children in your community to write letters in support of law enforcement and send them to your police agency. - Tell others on your social media that you support National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. Thank you for supporting law enforcement in whatever fashion you choose. Chief Mark Nicholson
