On July 1 of this year, I had a major surgery. I was prescribed a pain killer which I took for a few days. This medication is often used for acute pain, but also for chronic pain, so some people require it on a regular basis. A few days ago I received a letter about this medication. It says the DEA is now requiring that anyone receiving any medication containing hydrocodone, now have written prescription in hand for every refill. There will be no automatic, telephone, or computer-based ordering of these medications. But this strikes a wrong chord with me. The people who require these type of medications are usually the sickest, and in the most pain.... often chronic, intolerable pain. Now they are required to get up and travel to the doctors office each time they need a refill? I understand that these medications can be addictive and are sometimes abused, BUT what right does a government agency have making medical decisions concerning pain relief for a patient they do not know? The DEA does not know each specific patients needs... they just made a blanket rule for everyone, irregardless of how ill the patient is. I dont need any such medications (thank you, Lord) but there are many who do, and who will suffer having to travel each time. I fricking HATE the government involved in decisions between a doctor and his patients.
