On July 10, 2008, Hank Johnson was found beaten at the Executive Motel Room in Hearne, Texas. He was taken to St. Josephs Hospital in Bryan, Texas were he eventually succumbed to his injuries and passed away on July 22, 2008 at the age of 27. While several agencies investigated the case, a formal indictment was not brought until almost 5 years later. On May 15, 2013, this office formally indicted Trae Thompson for the death of Hank Johnson. Trae Thompson was the individual who was found to be in possession of (and had already pled guilty for the theft of) Mr. Johnsons guitars which where stolen out of the motel room on the night he was beaten. On January 27, 2014, Trae Thompson was sentenced to 15 months State Jail for the offense of Criminally Negligent Homicide, an offense which carries a maximum punishment range of 24 months in a State Jail Facility. Present at the sentencing was Sandy Johnson, the mother of Hank Johnson. Mrs. Johnson understood that no amount of prison time was going to bring her son back and was glad that she was finally getting some closure in the tragic death of her son. The District Attorneys office would like to thank Mrs. Johnson for her courage and understanding as well as all those who worked to assist in bringing some level of justice in the Hank Johnson case.
