On July 16, 1999, a tragedy unfolded. John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife, and her sister were completing a 200 mile trip to their home at Martha’s vineyard in a Piper single engine airplane piloted by JFK Jr. Just eight miles from his destination, the plane mysteriously crashed into the Atlantic Ocean, killing all three passengers. For weeks questions abounded as to why the airplane had crashed, many people presuming that the craft had been sabotaged and that the star-studded son of a U.S. president had been assassinated. But when the wreckage was discovered, no such evidence was discovered. Instead, the accident was blamed on a pilot’s inability to properly read his instruments. Piecing the tragedy together, forensic scientists concluded that on a hazy, moonless night, JFK Jr. had lost track of his direction. Having not learned how to use his instruments for guidance, he had solely relied on sight to navigate him through his travels, a choice that here led to horrific consequences. One year later, it was officially declared that the crash was caused by an inexperienced pilot who became disoriented in the dark and lost control. In a multitude of different ways, this same tragedy will beset anybody who simply relies on their own sight, mind, and intuition to get them through this journey called Life. We have been formed to need more direction in our choices and attitudes than our own bodies can conceive. That’s why God constantly beckons us to call out to Him for guidance in our daily travels. He gives us a beautiful gift called the Bible and an essential Presence called His Holy Spirit to carry us through even the darkest and murkiest paths of life. Being willing to follow His instruments and be led by His presence brings our life journey not to a tragic ending, but rather a thrilling reward. Today, remember to trust God’s instruments and His intimacy to lead you through the darkest moments of the day. “We live by faith, not by sight.” II Corinthians 5:7
