On July 16, the People’s Committee of the central province of Quang Binh decided to spend over VND23.5 billion to support offshore fishing and encourage the provision of related services. A fishing vessel in Quang Binh province (Photo: Nhan dan newspaper) Under the decision, the funds allocated to Dong Hoi city (VND7 billion), Bo Trach district (nearly VND9.5 billion), Quang Trach district (over VND2 billion), Ba Don town (VND4.6 billion) and Quang Ninh district (VND55 million), are expected to be used to buy fuel, telecommunications equipment, ship body insurance and insurance for fishermen. This is the fourth time such assistance is being provided to fishermen in the province following a decision issued by the Prime Minister on encouraging and supporting offshore fishing. The province has budgeted a total of over VND51.3 billion for 2014. The funding has helped fishermen in the province expand their fishing fleet by 64 boats with a capacity of 250 CV or more and to upgrade 192 other vessels. Phan Van Khoa, Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that apart from this assistance, the province has earmarked VND50 million to assist the building of each ship of 500CV capacity or more. One fisherman in the province has ordered the building of a steel fishing ship with a capacity of over 1,000 CV worth over VND10.3 billion. Quang Binh has over 4,000 fishing vessels of different kinds, including 1,000 capable of offshore fishing. Of the latter, 533 have installed telecom systems to serve offshore fishing, especially off the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa (Paracel and Spratly) archipelagos. In the first half of this year, fisheries output in the province saw a year-on-year increase of nearly 10% at 24,000 tons./.
