On June 12, 1665, the English changed the name New Amsterdam to New York, establishing the New York City we know today. The city was the capital of New Netherland from 1626 until the British captured it from Holland in 1664. So why change the name? Aside from removing reference to its previous national identity - a big thing in those days - according to some, people just liked it better that way. (Bet you thought I was going to tell you in 1776 Virginia became the first colonial legislature to adopt the Bill of Rights!)
