On Literary Nation radio now Iris Roley, a native of Cincinnati, OH, an advocate the past 13 years, designed, and monitored the reform of the Cincinnati Police Department. Her innovative and body of work has had a social impact throughout the United States. Her calling began, after two unarmed black men were killed by the CPD in November of 2001, those were the 14th and 15th killings within in a five year period. After multiple community meetings/conversations, and with the blessing of the African American (AA) Communities, “The Cincinnati Black United Front” (CBUF) were compelled to mobilize and represent the communities through this process. As the Project Manager for the CBUF, Iris implemented a strategy to collect stories from the AA community to identify the problems and determine the needs to address those problems. Iris uncovered over 400 stories of police brutality and misconduct- which were later used to file a class action lawsuit against the city of Cincinnati and its Police Department in federal court. The lawsuit eventually became to be known as it is today, the historic Collaborative Agreement and the Memorandum of Understanding between the City of Cincinnati and the Department of Justice. tune-in kabf.org
