On MLK day, a few thoughts. First, MLK. He was a revolutionary who went against the social mores of his times, but all the while, using Jesus as his point of reference. He changed the world through peace in a time of violence. He chose enlightenment while others lived in darkness. He didnt use the Bible as a source of division, but his inspiration for peace. To wit, a few quotes that resonate today: Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that. I have decided to stick with love, hate is too great of a burden to bear. Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity. If a man hasnt found something he is willing to die for, he isnt fit to live I remember reading my first MLK book at Hendrix College and discovering what a Christian should be. So I hope this isnt just another day off for many, but an inspiration for all. Spiritual leaders grounded in the true love of Jesus are far and few between in this day of loving money over people, loving power over justice, and those who dont respect the freedoms that come with all this. And yes, I am guilty of all the above.
