On March 18, 2007, two cougars arrived at Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in the back of a pick-up truck. Buttons and Little Bud, 6-year old brothers, were hauled to the facility in a 2’x 4’x 3’ crate from Hope, AR. Their owner had received the mother 6 years previously, unaware that she was pregnant at the time; three cubs were born shortly thereafter. The mother aggressively rejected the cubs, killing one and injuring Buttons tail, causing it to require amputation. The man immediately removed Buttons and Bud from the mother and hand-raised them. Their previous owner told us he had owned various exotic animals in the past and seemed well educated in the care and management exotic cats. Little Bud and Buttons appeared healthy when they arrived at the refuge; they had been fed a proper diet and their previous enclosure sounded more than suitable for 2 cougars. turpentinecreek.org/index.php/donations
