On March 19th, it required the presence of extra Forest Service - TopicsExpress

On March 19th, it required the presence of extra Forest Service and County personnel to pilot the grader through the Hyalite Road to the reservoir. The County Road Department can no longer plow the road to a sufficient width to allow more than one vehicle on the road in several locations. The width of the pile of snow between the open road and the guardrail is currently between 8 and 14 feet of snow. There is no longer any room for the snow to be stored. The plow truck the County has been using to plow snow has had a major mechanical failure and will be out for the rest of season. The repairs are roughly estimated at $20,000. The grader operator is unable to widen the road anymore than it is currently and his presence on the road is a safety hazard. At this time, Hyalite Canyon Road is down to a width of one lane in multiple locations with several blind corners between the gate and the dam. The portion of the road beyond the dam is completely impassible and will be closed for the season at midnight on March 21st. Ice climbers can still ski or snow bike the road to reach the ice just as we did for more three decades. Go have an adventure!
