On March 31, 1492 (with one and two centuries of delay with regard to their French and English counterparts) the Catholic Kings signed a famous edict in Granada. It ordered the expulsion of all the Jews from their kingdom who would not embrace Christianity. It is the symbolic date of a process, the Diaspora or dispersion, which nonetheless had begun earlier. For many years there had been forced conversions and systematic departures from the sweet land that those old Jews called Sefarad. We know that the document was prepared using a text by Tomas de Torquemada; and we can imagine it resting several days on a desk, perhaps ill at ease to the royal eyes.
