On Match of the Day last week, former England International Alan Shearer criticised Crystal Palace for trying to pass the ball out of defence against Man Utd. He could show us what he meant. It was easily visible on film. When Palace lost possesion just outside the 18 yrd box they conceded the penalty from which they lost the first goal. However there is a hidden cost to not passing out of defence, and because it is hidden it is often missing from this debate. The alternative to passing the ball out of defence is to kick into touch or hoof it up field. The quicker you concede possession the more often your opponents will regain possession and the more opportunities they will have to launch attacks against you. You condemn yourself to having to spend more time defending attacks than were necessary. Just a thought to what i said the other week when it came to just hoofing the ball back to there players to start again. Think about it.
