On May 12, 1928, pioneering aviator Bert Hinkler, having just completed a record breaking flight in February between England and Australia, visited Ulverstone Beach as part of a national celebration tour. He attracted huge crowds wherever he went. According to family history my aunt Eva Collins (Head), then 14, was fortunate enough to experience a flight as Bert took a few passengers on a quick joy ride. Below is a fascinating Advocate article which describes the events of the day and mentions quite a few town characters whose names will be familiar. Seems like Bert Hinkler was the Municipal Tea Rooms most famous customer!
