On May 9, 1900, almost 40 years after distinguishing himself in battle at Fort Wagner, William Carney Jr. was awarded the Medal of Honor. The Medal of Honor citation reads: “When the color sergeant was shot down, this soldier grasped the flag, led the way to the parapet, and planted the colors thereon. When the troops fell back he brought off the flag, under fierce fire in which he was twice severely wounded.” Carney, who was born in New Bedford and served in the Fifty-fourth Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, was the first African American to receive this honor. #blackhistory Image courtesy of National Archives
