On Monday, August 11th Police Chief Mark Kearse submitted his formal retirement notice from the City of Rolla effective September 30, 2014. In his retirement letter Chief Kearse noted, “I have enjoyed a 32 year career in law enforcement with 30 years at RPD. The Mayor, Council and Administration are a great group of public servants and a joy to work for.” Chief Kearse stated, “I could not be more proud of the service and dedication of the members of the Rolla Police Department” offered Chief Kearse. Chief Kearse and his wife are owners of the Fugitive Beach and the Fugitive Run Obstacle Course located in Phelps County – retirement provides the opportunity to dedicate more time to that effort. Chief Kearse was hired by the City of Rolla in 1982 and rose to the rank of Chief in April 2007. In light of some recent complaints filed by an employee of the Police Department Chief Kearse has been placed on Administrative Leave pending an internal investigation. According to City Administrator John Butz there was no way to do the investigation fairly for the parties involved under the Chief’s active supervision. “We are confident the investigation can be completed in the next couple weeks and look forward to moving forward”, Butz said. According to Butz the Chief’s pending retirement is not related to the investigation. “Chief Kearse has led by example and under his leadership the Rolla PD remains a professional, dedicated and well-respected agency. We wish him all the best in his retirement”, Mayor Lou Magdits added.
