On Monday (August 18th) at approximately 3 PM, Arkansas State Troopers became aware of a Garland County Sheriff’s Department pursuit of a pick-up truck along U.S. Highway 70. State Troopers deployed spike strips in advance of the pursuit near the intersection of State Highway 182 and successfully caused one tire of the truck to deflate. The truck driver continued to flee from law enforcement officers through the communities of Glenwood, Kirby, Daisy and New Hope. State Troopers assumed command of the pursuit at the Pike and Howard County line. Arkansas State Police Trooper Kyle Jones advised local authorities of the pursuit, that reached speeds of 75 miles per hour and over. The suspect made multiple attempts to hit Pike County Chief Deputy David Shelbys vehicle, but did not slow down. State Troopers initiated a precision immobilization technique which caused the truck to eventually come to a stop near Dierks. Ruben Stapleton, 41, of Pearcy was taken into custody, transported to the Pike County Jail where he was charged with aggravated assault, felony fleeing and DWI. He is facing charges in at least three counties. The investigation associated with the incident is continuing. (Photos provided by the Pike County Sheriffs Department.)
