On Monday, August 4, 2014 at approximately 3:12 p.m. NYPD Harbor Unit Scuba Launch #8 responded to a 911 call of three persons in the water at Pier 16 located within the confines of the 1st Precinct. Upon arrival police determined that a 24 year-old male dock worker fell into the water after he was struck by a rope and a metal cleat which snapped from a boat after it pulled away from the dock. Two good Samaritans, males ages 18 and 54, jumped in the water to assist the dock worker, holding him afloat until a Harbor Unit arrived at the scene. Two Harbor Unit Scuba divers, PO Patrick McGrath and PO Michael Guida, entered the water and removed all three males. The 24 year-old dock worker was transported to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition with a laceration to his chin. The good Samaritans did not receive any injuries and refused medical attention.
