On Monday I went to Auckland to welcome the Prime Minister of Solomon Islands Gordon Lilo together with his Ministers of Police, Development and Aviation to new Zealand on behalf of the government. On Thursday I will be bringing the group to the Wairarapa to meet 40 Solomon Islanders working at JR’s orchard in Greytown who are picking and packing pears and apples for export. For the first time 10 Papua New Guinean’s have also travelled to work in the orchard under the Regional Employment Scheme. This scheme contributes significantly to our economy and the workers take home significant savings – often much more than they could earn in several years back home. Now for the best bit, are you ready children, here we go: Gone are the days when WINZ used to bus beneficiaries from Masterton to Greytown to work on the orchard. The beneficiaries did not like heavy orchard work preferring to collect their benefit and sit watching TV in their homes. I can tell you that a lot of local willing workers like me got sick of applying in good faith for a job at JRs - he never had any intention of hiring us - why would he - hes RAKING IT IN - in rents AND cheap wages! While local families miss out on the jobs!
