On November 20, 1943, the Battle of Tarawa began. The Battle of Tarawa was the first American offensive in the Pacific region.4,500 Japanese defenders were well-supplied and well-prepared, and they fought almost to the last man, exacting a heavy toll on the United States Marine Corps. The US marines loaded onto small boats to be transported onto the beaches. Low tides caused the boats to hit the coral reef surrounding the island. Hundreds of marines either drowned or were cut to pieces from Japanese machine gun fire. The marines kept fighting on thru sheer will and determination and eventually took the island after suffering nearly 3000 casualties. This little talked about battle was extremely pivotal for the US getting closer to the Japanese mainland. Battles like this somehow get lost in history when these men made the ultimate sacrifice so we can sit on our fat asses playing on our iPhones. I wish people were a little more in-tune with our countries history and give credit where it is due to these true American Heroes.
