On November 21, 2014, around 12:25 p.m. a Deputy advised a citizen at B and Jeffers Street in North Platte, NE. said his car had just been stolen. The victims said his vehicle was last seen westbound on B Street. Another Deputy spotted the vehicle on Buffalo Bill Avenue traveling south, near Leota Street. The Deputy attempted to stop the vehicle and the driver refused. The Deputy pursued the vehicle west on Walker Road at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. The vehicle turned South on Hershey / Dickens Road and continued at a high rate of speed. The vehicle turned west on State Highway 23 and traveled to the entrance of Opplinger Farms (large cattle feedlot). The vehicle sped through the feed lot, with many employees around. The feedlot has only gravel roads and is not conducive to high speed driving. The driver lost control of the vehicle approximately one mile north in the feedlot and crashed into steel fencing and concrete feed bunks. The driver appeared uninjured and was apprehended by the Deputy. While searching the male driver the Deputy found he had a large knife hidden on his person. The driver was identified as eighteen year old North Dakota resident Dayton A. Whitley. Mr. Whitley was transported to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and interviewed for the theft of the vehicle by North Platte Police. He was incarcerated by the Sheriff’s Office for: Felony Fleeing to Avoid Arrest and Carrying a Concealed Weapon. The vehicle appeared to be a total loss. The investigation continues.
