On November 30, 1934, the Flying Scotsman became the first steam locomotive to hit 100 mph. During the 1988 Australian Bicentennial celebrations, the locomotive was brought to Australia and travelled the country. It set another record for the longest one-day run by a steam locomotive, 422 miles between Parkes and Broken Hill, on August 8, 1989. It set its own haulage record of 735 tons between Tarcoola and Alice Springs (490 mile leg). Built in 1923, the Flying Scotsman was retired from regular service in 1963 after travelling 2,076,000 miles. It went on to tour the US and Australia. For both tours, it had to be fitted with regulation equipment to make it track-worthy, such as air brakes, and in the US, a cow-catcher.
