On November 9, 1938, an anti-Jewish pogrom called the Night of Broken Glass, or Kristallnacht in German, began in Germany and Austria. 91 Jews were murdered, 30,000 were arrested, over 1,000 synagogues were burned and over 7,000 Jewish businesses were destroyed or damaged. The following day, November 10, the Jewish victims were blamed for the event and were forced to clean up the damage. This massive attack was a turning point in Nazi Germanys history. The ease with which the majority of German civilians had acted in decimating Jewish life foreshadowed the future policy of extermination. The Nazi regime also began large-scale deportations of Jews to concentration camps until a final solution was reached.
