On Oct. 23, 1965, The Byrds recording of the song Turn! Turn! Turn! (to Everything There Is a Season) entered the charts at #80. The song was released on Oct. 1st of that year. The song was written by Pete Seeger in the late 1950s. The lyrics, except for the title which is repeated throughout the song, and the final verse of the song, are adapted word-for-word from Chapter 3 of the Book of Ecclesiastes, set to music and recorded in 1962. The song was originally released as To Everything There Is a Season on The Limeliters album Folk Matinee and then some months later on Seegers own The Bitter and the Sweet. By Dec. 4, it was the #1 song in the U.S. The song holds distinction of being a #1 hit with the oldest lyrics (Book of Ecclesiastes), authored by King Solomon. Turn! Turn! Turn! was on the move, 49 years ago today.
