On October 1, IPACE hosted an intensive, full-day workshop on “Advocacy Skills Building” with 25 participants from 18 different organizations and political parties. The workshop served as an introduction to advocacy basics by covering the role of citizen-led advocacy in a democracy, steps in an advocacy strategy, identifying advocacy issues, and mapping advocacy stakeholders. In groups, participants were asked to “put advocacy plans into action” by presenting a basic plan for an advocacy agenda selected by that group. Carol Jenkins, World Learning’s Executive Vice President for Global Development was present to observe the workshop and hand-out certificates of completion. The workshop was led by former IPACE course instructors Dim Sian Nem and Sit Maw. Dim Sian Nem previously taught the institute’s “Communications and Advocacy for Change” course, and both Nem and Sit Maw worked with Eric Bjornland, Co-Founder and Principal of Democracy International to introduce the “Advocacy in Democracy” course last year.
