On On Day 3 I am entering head studies, a category which I have - TopicsExpress

On On Day 3 I am entering head studies, a category which I have painted more often from life than any other. During my 24 years, as an illustrator, 1980-2004, I was painting illustrations in the traditional manner, from photo references and I seldom had time to paint from life. The study of Emily was painted from life towards the end of my illustration career in 1998, while I was teaching at the School of Visual Arts. This renewed my desire to paint from life which captured qualities not evident in the photograph. After I stopped doing illustrations, I flung myself into painting from life primarily at the Art Students League which is where I painted Donna, in 2008, a more rendered head study than I usually did. And this is about the time I started teaching workshops. In most of my Painting From Life workshops I taught painting alla prima by carefully observing the form of the model. Here is an example of such a study which I painted as a live demonstration for an audience at the Florence Academy in Florence, Italy, in 2014, explaining my procedure as I painted. I enjoyed capturing the expression of the person posing, the development of form through careful observation of shapes, values and color along with the fluidness of the painting technique.
