On Orkuma Hembes Birthday By Iorliam Shija On 6th August 2005, HE Very Revd Fr Moses O Adasu, The Akumada of Igedde,of blessed memories, was addressing Community of Tiv Students, Benue State University-Makurdi, chapter. The tittle of his speech was Intropection: Key to the development Of Tiv Nation. The Master of Ceremony was Terver Orduen who is today the Executive Chairman of Ushongo Local Government. Half way in Adasus speech, a coaster bus entered gracefully with the inscription: Ayatutu... Adasu pulsed briefly and out came a very confident looking young man. Orduen informed us that the pulse was in honour of the National Association Nigerian Students, NANS president; Orkuma Hembe. The neatly dressed and confident young man was the president. Today is that young mans Birthday. Someday, Tivland and Benue State shall celebrate this great son of ours; for the grace and candour that he brought to bear on the Nations consciousness. Mention shall be made of how he integrated our young people into national student Unionism, preparing them for their respective roles into mainstream politics... As students, singing aluta and exhibiting political naivety then , Hembe and his friends might have made mistakes, here and there, but in all, Orkuma Hembe, not bellittling the earlier exploits of the Skatas, Anaanas and perhaps, Late Basil Chianson, Livingstone Kwanga and Ben Steve(of blessed memories), rose to be the greatest Student unionist of Benue extraction of all times. As we hand Hembe to history so that he shall be celebrated as at appropriate, on his birthday today, we wish him happy birthday and many More years. Aluta continua, great comrade.
