On Saturday 1st February & Sunday 2nd February 2014, a team from the Gibraltar Taekwondo, representing Gibraltar, participated at the Open International Poomsae & Sparring Championships held in Nottingham, UK. Nottingham Taekwondo Club hosted the event and the competition received approx 600 players from throughout England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Wales, Egypt, India, Italy, Spain and Denmark. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the organisers for such a well-organised event and for their hospitality. Saturday was the day for the patterns (Poomsae). This was held at the Ellis Guildford Sports Centre. Here are the Poomsae Results: Dana Garcia – A Class Individual Under 29 – 6th Lorena Garcia – A Class Individual Under 29 – 5th Megan Ruiz – A Class Individual Under 17 – 4th – Bronze Medal Macy Cornelio – B Class Individual Under 12 – 5th Dana/Lorena/Megan – 1st Team Synchronized – 3rd – Bronze Medal This was Macy’s first competition abroad and did very well by making it to the finals. She missed out on bronze by 0.05 of a point. Also a well deserved medal for Megan at her first competition in the A Class Individual Under 17 category, where she competed against Nikhita Mistry who represented GB at the 2013 World Championships. Sunday was the day for the sparring (Kyorugi). This was held at the Nottingham Wildcats Arena. Here are the Kyorugi Results: Alex Trinidad – A Class -80kgs – Bronze Medal Leon Garcia – A Class -74kgs – Quarterfinal Wayne Estella – A Class -80kgs – Quarterfinal Nicole Smart – A Class -51kgs – Quarterfinal Craig Gill – C Class -41kgs – Bronze Medal Stanley Olivero – C Class -37kgs – Silver Medal Ayoub Arrais – C Class -55kgs – Silver Medal Abdullah Ahammad – C Class -53kgs – Gold Medal All the participants gave a good account of themselves, especially the A Class who competed against representatives of the Great Britain Team. Wayne fought against Tom Smith (GB Team player and WKA World Champion and ITF World Champion), whilst Alex fought against Danny Dowling (also GB Team player). Nicole also ended up fighting a GB Team player in her first fight ever. All our participants had the opportunity to meet Sarah Stevenson World & European Champion and Bronze medallist at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and Adrian Tranter British Taekwondo and Commonwealth Taekwondo Union Chairman and Vice President of the European Taekwondo Union. Both Masters Ernest and Edward Garcia would like to express how proud they are of their achievements and hope that they continue with this progress, so as to obtain more experiences and opportunities that will further their development of this Sport.
