On Saturday 5th October hundreds of hardened fell runners will descend on Saddleworth to compete in the Saddleworth Edges Fell Race. Organised by Saddleworth Runners Club, the 8 mile event, that involves over 1,150 feet of lung busting ascent, is also part of the Grand-prix Run the Moors series. Starting at Tanners Mill, Greenfield the runners, start with a steep and brutal climb onto Alphin Pike before heading along Stable Stones Brow to Chew Reservoir. After crossing the dam wall, of what was once the highest reservoir in Britain, the route follows the rocky edges on the opposite side of the valley along to Fox Stone Cairn. From the rocky rim, over looking Dove Stone Reservoir, the runners will make a rapid descent of over 250 metres in around 2 minutes, to valley the bottom. With legs now sapped of virtually all energy they will make a final short climb up Chew Brook before heading along through the plantation and back to Tanners Mill. saddleworth-runners.co.uk/races/saddleworth-edges/
