On Saturday July 26th, a stray dog was found wandering on an area road, he was brought to the Arnprior Humane Society for care. When shelter staff went out to the parking lot to help, they were horrified at what they found. The dog that climbed out of the van was a huge, matted mess, he had obviously suffered many years of unimaginable neglect. He had difficulty walking and was dragging a heavy chain that was padlocked to his collar. Despite his horrible condition, he was a happy boy and greeted everyone with a smile, peeking out of all that hair were soft, intelligent eyes. We soon realized that he was very uncomfortable, with thick, massive matts attached to every part of his body, he couldnt walk or sit down properly because the hair was matted together. We wanted to alleviate his discomfort as quickly as possible but knew we had a huge job ahead of us. We contacted the Valley Vet clinic in Carleton Place, and cant thank Dr. Lea Button enough, for agreeing to meet us after hours at her clinic. We brought him in and had him sedated, then began the difficult task of shaving him. It was a long process, taking three hours with three sets of clippers to remove 10 lbs of hair. His hair was unbelievably thick, his nails were long and overgrown, he had urine & feces embedded in the matts, the stench was unbearable. The pads of his feet are very soft & tender from being encased in matted hair, and he has poor muscle tone from being chained up. As we were shaving him, he began to resemble a lion, so we decided to name him Leo. Under all that hair we found an obese Golden Doodle, it was heartbreaking to think that someone was feeding him daily & had trimmed the hair around his face but still allowed him to suffer day after day. Since his vet visit, Leo has thrived, this brave boy has quickly stolen the hearts of all that have met him. He is good natured and smart, hes enjoying his freedom and likes to follow his nose around the yard. He doesnt like being outside for long and is really fond of his bed! He will be available for adoption once we get to know him better, he will be neutered and groomed. Watch for him on the website.
