On Saturday, Mark O’Meley will play his first game on Australian soil since mid-2009, after deciding to make an surprise comeback for NSW Cup battlers Wyong Kangaroos. The 32-year-old intended to retire after suffering a medial ligament tear in the Challenge Cup final last August, and returned to his childhood stomping ground on the Central Coast with ambitions to help teenage sons Nick and Jake establish their own NRL careers. O’Meley could not resist the itch to train everyday, while wife Sandy noticed the competitive urge had not been doused. She then encouraged him to accept an offer from desperate Wyong officials. O’Meley emerged a satisfied man after playing the first 35 minutes of Wyong’s final trial against Penrith, but this weekend’s season opener against one of his old clubs – North Sydney Bears – will be the genuine test. Should O’Meley pass muster interest will surely turn to the possibility of an NRL return, particularly given front row stocks are dangerously thin at several clubs including the Manly Sea Eagles, Cronulla Sharks and Newcastle Knights.
