On Saturday, October 19th, 2013, at 3:55 pm, people living on both Milagra Drive and Manor Drive in Pacifica began calling 911 to report a wildland fire on Milagra Ridge, which is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The fire was located in a steep gulley behind the apartments at 468 Manor Drive. The fire was burning in low scrub brush and was moving quickly uphill toward the apartments and nearby homes. Only fast work by first arriving Pacifica Engine 71, and Daly City Engine 94 and South San Francisco Engine 64 kept the fire from spreading to the structures. A second alarm was made and those three fire companies kept the fire in check until the second alarm units arrived on scene to assist. In addition to the fire units from the local agencies that responded, there was a CalFire response of several Type 3 wildland engines, a bulldozer, and four aircraft, including a helicopter, which made two water drops on the fire. Due to the fog that was moving in the fixed wing aircraft were unable to operate in the area. Manor Drive was closed by Pacifica Police for several hours while the fire was being fought. The fire was under control in a few hours and while the units were mopping up and putting out hot spots it was noted that the fire came to within 5 of the back deck of one of the apartments at 468 Manor Drive, a close call indeed. (My address is 494 Manor Drive)
