On Saturday September 13th, from Noon to 4PM, a live-over-the-internet Telethon will be produced to benefit The Hurley Family of Shawnee, Kansas. Paul Hurley, the 54-year old father of Lauryn and wife of Trudy, recently became a near paraplegic due to complications from Type One diabetes. Hurley has suffered from the disease since childhood. The family faces crushing a financial burden from medical bills as well as from modifications to their home to accommodate Paul’s health situation. The “Helping Hands Webcast” is a first in Kansas City, being produced entirely on a volunteer basis out of the studios of Video Communication Studios of Lenexa. The show will be hosted by noted Kansas City TV personality Katie Horner, along with local ring announcer Paul Craig. Valissa Smith, a noted TV personality whose family has been touched by Type 1 diabetes, will offer insight into the disease. The website for the event is: new.livestream/HelpingHandsWebcast. Donations will be taken through GoFundMe. Other donation portals will be offered as well. Performers and community theatres from throughout the Kansas City metro area will provide entertainment. The extended Hurley Family is extremely well known in the theatre community. Paul’s wife Trudy, her daughter Lauryn, sister Stasha Case, father Forrest “Frosty” White, and brother-in-law Bill Case have been performing in local community theatre since the 80’s. “Everyone wants to help out the family but didn’t know how,” says Video Communications co-owner and Executive Producer of the Helping Hands Webcast, Pete Barrett. “We have access to a TV studio and scores of wonderful theatre folks who want to do anything they can for the family.” Pete Barrett is the former Program Director of KCTV5. Katie Horner has hosted many Telethons, including the Children’s Miracle Network. She recently launched the business “ASAP Plumbing” with her fiancé. Co-host Paul Craig has a long history of community involvement, including staging “The Penguin House” in Olathe every holiday season. He is the owner of Theatre Tech Productions, a professional ring announcer and emcee, talent agent and performer. Video Communication Studios (VideoCommunicationStudio) is providing the facilities for the webcast. The company specializes in educational and training videos.
