On Saturday evening 3 weeks ago my dad received a double lung - TopicsExpress

On Saturday evening 3 weeks ago my dad received a double lung transplant at the Alfred Hospital after a long battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Hugging and kissing him good luck as they wheeled him off to the operating theatre was one of the happiest, scariest, gut wrenching moments of my life. The incredible dedication and passion of the doctors and nurses at the Alfred Hospital will never be forgotten. The selfless act of kindness by the donors family to make the decision to give life in their time of grief has given my dad a second chance at life. He will now live to grow old with his childhood sweetheart, see his family grow (yes grandkids soon dad!), he will be able to cook a BBQ for his mates, he will have the chance to get fit and healthy again and to breath freely! In a few weeks time I will be running the Bridge to Brisbane raising money and to create awareness for Transplant Australia. Transplant Australia exists to enrich and celebrate life. They work in the area to increase the rate of organ and tissue donation, improve the communitys understanding of donation and to provide support to recipients, their families and those touch by organ donation. This isnt the first time my family has been touched by organ donation, my father-in-law was a liver transplant recipient 24 years ago. I am eternally grateful to the donor and their family for giving life to my dad.
