On Saturday morning, a very nice young man called and gave us the news we had all been hoping for; Katy, after missing for 30 hours, had been found! She was sleeping in some bushes in the front of his house and she allowed him to get her into his back yard and give her some water. He reported she was limping but otherwise appeared fine. We rushed to pick her up. Upon seeing her, we knew there was something very wrong with her left rear leg. She was basically just dragging it behind her. We immediately took her to the vet where x-rays were performed and it was discovered that our sweet girl had a very severe fracture of her femur. We think she was most likely struck by a car. We were given two options; a surgery that could repair the break, but would require several weeks of recovery time and would most likely leave Katy in some degree of pain for the rest of her life, or amputation. Considering all that Katy has been through since she came to BDAR (she was painfully shy and closed off for months when she first arrived) we wanted to choose what we thought would be the least traumatizing for her and made the difficult decision to have the leg amputated. Recovery time for amputations if shorter and they adapt almost seamlessly to only having three legs. Katy is in surgery now and will be a tri-pod when she wakes up. We are so happy that Katy is alive and safe and know that because she is such a brave girl she will make it through this as stoically has she has everything else she has encountered. If you would like to contribute to Katys care, please visit our website bdar.org and click on the green Donate Now button. You can shoot us an email after youve done so and just let us know that you wish for your donation to go towards her care. Thank you everyone for all your concern for Katy over the past couple days. We are so glad shes back!
