On Saturday morning, the Hutcherson YMCA in north Tulsa is hosting a community open house that includes an anti-bullying forum, basketball tournament, a gathering of community organizations, face painting, dancing and more. The anti-bullying forum will be conducted by Carver basketball coach B.J. Brown and former Booker T. Washington all-state quarterback Charles Davis. “They will be talking to students about being student athletes,” said Fred Jones, event organizer. “Sometimes it’s tough because we tell them to win at any cost in sports and it becomes tough to be students. They are going to teach them how to turn on being a student.” The open-house event is in its second year. Last year it drew about 300 people, and more than 500 are expected to attend Saturday. Jones said that with people from throughout the metro area attending, it will be a good opportunity to showcase north Tulsa. “There will be people from Jenks, Broken Arrow and Owasso coming to north Tulsa. I believe that is just what Dr. King would want us to do,” Jones said. “This is a chance to show off the community to the rest of the city in a positive way. It’s a bonus with the social climate being so tense around us to bring everyone together on MLK Saturday to celebrate.”
