On Sep. 26, 43 students were kidnapped in Iguala, Mexico by the city’s police and handed over to the Guerreros Unidos gang. The current investigation points to local authorities and Iguala’s mayor conniving for the crime’s occurrence, using the gang as a way to get rid of the students who were in the city to protest “discriminatory hiring and funding practices by the Mexican government.” As of today, the students are presumed dead. These series of events have unveiled a system of corruption that have led the people of Mexico to rise up in protests & manifestations in what Mexican writer Elena Poniatowska describes as an environment where “ all the demons have come out” and laid to the naked eye the atrocities going on in the country. Help Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc. raise awareness of these events by wearing black on Thursday, Nov. 20. This act will be the beginning of a campaign that will lead to a vigil on Dec. 3rd, hosted by Amnesty International Armstrong and Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc., alongside the support of the Beta Alpha Chapter of Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. Be on the lookout for more information throughout the week in the Student Union and please, help us spread the word and raise awareness through social media! #todosunidosporayotzinapa https://youtube/watch?v=Fb2mYiR0s-s
