On September 18 the US House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations held a hearing led by Chairman Tim Murphy and Raking Member Diana DeGette on the topic of “Suicide Prevention and Treatment: Helping Loved Ones in Mental Health Crisis.” AFSP Chief Medical Officer Christine Moutier testified on the scope and the causes of suicide, the importance of suicide prevention research, prevention programs, and support programs for those touched by suicide. Dr. Moutier indicated that “the fight against suicide is nearing a tipping point,” and “that our nation must battle mental health illiteracy so we can eradicate stigma and remove barriers that keep people suffering in silence.” She put AFSPs goal of reducing the nations rate of suicide 20% by 2025 forward, citing the approaches that are backed by evidence and the readiness of the American people for a greater understanding of suicide and mental health. Opportunities like this are so important in bringing the issues surrounding suicide prevention to the forefront and making positive changes in public policy. This is why we firmly support the AFSP in their efforts. Our voices cannot be silenced because we must speak for those who need help.
