On September 2, 1945 World War II Formally ended, this is also the official beginning to the Cold War between the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which would last until December 26, 1991, the date recognized as when the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics fell and the United States of America was unofficially declared the winner. I say unofficially because the 46 years the world stood on the brink of nuclear destruction as the only two super powers played their game of world domination, like chess masters vying for the only Grand Master title, has never been recognized officially as a conflict. Even though both nations spent more money on their collective militaries than two thirds of the rest of the world combined gross national product. Even though during this 46 year period, Korea, Vietnam, and Grenada (to name just a few) would erupt in war not over good vs. evil, but democracy vs. communism. Even though we would see the formation of the United Nations, North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the Soviet Pack Nations, whose combined militaries were capable of concurring the world, in a matter of a few days. Even though seventy five percent of the nations of the earth would declare themselves allied to one or the other of the super powers and the rest would be in bed with both. I could go on but I think you get the message, during this 46 year period, more Soldiers, Sailors, Airman and Marines participated in combat operations as a direct result of the policies of the United States Government as it pertained to the Cold War, than WWI and WWII combined. The two super powers stood on imaginary lines and waited on the other to blink. The world cowered in fear at the thought that one would blink. Children were being taught how to survive, television shows and movies were being produced giving us a look it to what the world may look like after one of them blinked. And the only reason, the only reason they didnt blink was because of the Men and Women of the United States Military who stood on that imaginary line prepared to give their last full devotion to defend the United States of America and its people. Leaders on both sides have been credited with protecting the world and ending the Cold War, but to date the true heroes who stood that line have not been recognized for their service during this conflict. Its time now to recognize those men and women for their great service, its time to acknowledge that without them the world would look very different, so join me in asking our Congress and President to honor their service to this great nation by awarding a Cold War Service Medal.
