On September 6, 1901, Leon Czolgosz (pronounced cull chetch) stood in line for a half hour to meet President William McKinley as he was shaking the hands the Temple of Music. He had his right hand lightly bandaged with a handkerchief. When it was Czolgoszs turn to shake the Presidents hand, McKinley noticed the bandaged right hand (thinking it was injured) and extended his left hand to greet him. The assassin fired two shots with his .32 caliber Ivers-Johnson revolver, hitting McKinley twice. One of the bullets ricocheted off a pin and lodged in McKinleys clothing. The other ripped through the Presidents stomach, pancreas and kidney. McKinley fell to his knees, looked down at his bloody shirt and said, Be careful how you tell my wife. McKinley died on September 14, 1901. Czolgosz was electrocuted on October 29, 1901. Muriatic acid was poured on his corpse to keep souvenir seekers from disturbing the remains. INTERESTING NOTE: Czolgosz was from Alpena, Michigan. He was an unemployed anarchist and readily admitted to shooting McKinley. He proudly boasted, I killed President McKinley because I done my duty. I didnt believe one man should have so much service and another man should have none.
