On Sunday, November 19, the Cathedral along with six embassies marked Remembrance Day with a special service. The service was a collaboration of effort between the embassies of Australia, Canada, France, Germany, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. This years service marked not only Remembrance Day (also known as Armistice Day or Veterans Day), but also marked a century since the beginning of World War I. The service brought together many traditions from different countries and included a French bagpipe player, a brass quintet from Germany, and two buglers from the United Kingdom’s Royal Marines. At exactly 1100 on Sunday a congregation of approximately 1500 people, marked two minutes silence followed by the laying of a poppy wreath to honour the fallen from all conflicts. In a particularly poignant moment French and German children read out letters in their native languages from soldiers writing home to their families during the Great War, highlighting the human element to all conflict. This unique service captured the importance of remembering all of those people that have gone before us making the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of freedom. photos Donovan Marks
