On The Road As the crow flies into the windshield a disembodied pair of raccoon ears flutter in the wake of big-rig wind. Four less-than-lucky rabbits feet were ripped from Thumpers post-mortem mother and are now strewn across the shoulder. A motorcycle cop struck down a family of quail. The pair of proud parents and 12 plump chicks were scrambled and smeared. Fried yolk stuck on sunbaked sidewalk. Chickens have died playing chicken without a punch line. The pearly rotting remnants of a rat-tailed opossum lay inside out in the bike lane. While nearby, the linguini guts of of a mangy coyote spill from its split belly. Squirrels and abandoned kittens clutter our highways and streets and no one ever speaks of it-- Except for the turkey vultures who sing about it.
