On The Rocks was the first old school late-70s/early 80s-style rock and roll bar in Deep Ellum. Interesting because it was the first club to open down there that didnt cater specifically to the kids who were into alternative rock, hip-hop, punk or speed metal. It was a risky venture, because it wasnt like they could tap into a pre-existing audience. They literally had to bring these glam rock bar band folks into the neighborhood for the first time. And they pulled it off. Stepping into the club was like climbing into a time machine; the DJ had a microphone and often reminded the patrons to tip their bartenders and waitresses, copy bands covered Van Halen covering The Kinks, everyone had a cigarette in one hand and Jack & Coke in the other, etc. It was very much like Cardis or Mother Blues, only ten years later and two hundred yards down the street from where Janes Addiction or the Flaming Lips might now be playing. We cringed when they first threw out their shingle, but after a couple of months everybody got used to each other and we all learned to co-exist. I honestly cant remember a single band that I ever saw there, but the spectacle in and of itself was interesting.
