On This Date in Delaware, December 26: 1776 The Delaware Regiment, with less than 100 men led by Colonel Haslet of Milford, helped capture the Hessians in Trenton when Washington crossed the Delaware River. 1812 In the second “War of Independence” with England, the British Navy blockaded the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays. 1848 In Wilmington, P. T. Barnum exhibited the ten year old Tom Thumb, alias Charles Stratton, who stood 25 inches tall and weighed but 15 lbs. 2012 Thirteen cars of a Norfolk Southern freight train derailed near Bridgeville. While the train carried mostly gravel, one car was hauling 33,000 gallons of propane which remained intact. Nearby houses were evacuated with no harm to residents.
