On This Date in Delaware, December 4... 1682 William Penn annexed his Lower Three Counties (Delaware) to Pennsylvania in his first assembly meeting in present-day Chester. 1777 Smyrnas Captain Allen McLane alerted General Washington to a proposed British attack and helped him avoid an ambush outside Philadelphia. 1802 The Vestry of Old Swedes Church in Wilmington resolved to build a tower and belfry. 2008 The Du Pont Company announced cost cutting measures due to the sluggish economy. It planned to cut 2,500 jobs worldwide - about 4% of its work force. It also announced cutting 4,000 contract workers with more in the coming year.
