On This Date in Delaware, June 15: 1695 Watches were set up in Lewes to guard against French privateers who came to raid the town. 1863 Because of the lack of space at Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island, Confederate prisoners who died were interred at Finn’s Point across the Delaware River in New Jersey. 1951 Cora Saunders and Kathryn Hazeur became the first African Americans to receive a degree from the University of Delaware when they earned Master’s degrees in Education. 2013 A truck carrying 42 pregnant cows from Iowa bound for the Wilmington Marine Terminal then overseas, crashed off the I-495 exit.
