On This Day 1650 Colonel George Monck 1st Duke of Albermarle formed his Regiment of Foot in Coldstream Scotland. The regiment went on to become the Coldstream Guards. One of only two regiments of the Household Division that can trace their origins back to the New Model Army 1883 William Tierney Clark English civil engineer was born (He is most famous for his pioneering design and construction of suspension bridges. two of his best known works are the Hammersmith Bridge the first suspension bridge over the River Thames but best know of all is his chain bridge across the Danube named the Szechenyl Bridge the first first bridge linking Buda with Pest) 1305 William Wallace Scottish landowner and soldier died (Wallace along with Andrew Moray defeated an English army at the Battle of Stirling Bridge which resulted in Wallace being chosen to become Guardian of Scotland a position he held until his defeat at the Battle of Falkirk. In August 1305 just outside Glasgow he was captured and handed over to Edward I who had him hung drawn and quartered for high treason and crimes against English civilians)
