On This Day 1666 During the second Anglo Dutch War Rear Admiral Robert Holmes led an attack on the island of Terscelling in which he and his men managed to destroy 150 Dutch merchant ships. In doing so six of his men died and the same number injured. The raid later became known as Holmes Bonfire 1871 Orville Wright American inventor was born (He and his brother Wilbur began by making bicycles and repairing small pieces of agricultural equipment. They became famous for their invention the Wright Flier the worlds first successful powered heavier than air flying machine) 1987 Michael Robert Ryan unemployed labourer died ( Armed with two semi automatic rifles and a hand gun he shot and killed sixteen people including his own mother. He also wounded a further fifteen before shooting himself. Known as the Hungerford Massacre from the village where it took place. This led to changes to the laws about gun ownership)
