On This Day 1768 James Cook began his first voyage of discovery. The purpose of the voyage was to watch and record the transit of Venus across the Sun. this was achieved in Tahiti on the 13 April. He then opened his sealed orders from the Admiralty that directed him to find "Terra Australis". He went to New Zealand and mapped the entire coast, then sailed westward and landed on the east coast of Australia and named it Botany Bay 1724 George Stubbs British artist was born (George worked for his father as a currier and leather merchant. He was then apprenticed to a painter and engraver but soon left. He travelled over Europe studying anatomy especially that of horses, and became famous for his equine portraits) 1818 James Watt Scottish inventor and engineer died (Although James never invented the steam engine, he transformed it in to a much more powerful and cost efficient device. He then discovered a way to turn the steam engines power into a rotary motion the "Age of Steam" had arrived)
