On This Day 1831 Isaac Singer received a patent for his Sewing Machine. He did not invent the device but his improvements were significant enough to warrant the patent. He made it a viable proposition not only commercially, but usable in the home opening up a whole new market. He also made it available on a payment plan thus ensuring himself huge sales 1881 Cecil Blount DeMille American film director was born. (His first film The Squaw Man was released in 1914 and was a box office success that also put Hollywood on the map of the film production industry. He is best remembered for his elaborate historical and biblical epics such as Cleopatra, The Ten Commandments and Sampson and Delilah to name just three of his multi award winning films) 1848 George Stephenson English civil and mechanical engineer died. (The Victorians considered him a great example of diligent application and self improvement. He built the first Inter City public railway using steam locomotives in the world The Liverpool to Manchester Railway. His rail gauge of 4 8½ known as Stephensons Gauge is still used to this day on railways all over the world)
