On This Day 1871 Nat Turner an African American slave saw a Solar Eclipse and thought it was a sign from God. Eight days later he and seventy other slaves attacked and killed fifty five Whites in a failed slave rebellion in Southampton County Virginia. Nat Turner and fifty six others were tried and hung and a further two hundred slaves were killed in violent back lashes all over Virginia. Several new laws were drafted preventing the education of all Blacks both slaves and freemen 1860 Phoebe Ann Mosey Female American sharp shooter was born (Better known as Annie Oakley her shooting feats are legendary. She joined Buffalo Bills Wild West Show and travelled the world. One of her most famous tricks was to have playing card thrown into the air and shoot several holes in them before they hit the ground from 90 feet way. these cards were given out to the crowd for free admission to the show. Free tickets in America are still called Annies to this day) 1964 Peter Alan and Gwynne Owen Evans British murderers died (Both men had criminal records for petty theft and they tried to rob John Alan West in his home in Seaton Cumberland.and killed him whilst doing so. They were caught and arrested two days later. Found guilty and given the death sentence which as hanging was being phased out surprised everyone. They appealed but this was turned down. Gwynne Owen Evans was hung in Manchesters Strangeways prison at 8:00 am and Peter Alan was hung in Liverpools Walton prison also at 8:00 am. The last two persons hung in Britain)
